Arlan Hamilton of Backstage Capital to Speak in St. Louis

is Founder and Managing Partner at
Backstage Capital.
On Friday, October 19, 2018, the VISION conference returns to St. Louis. VISION 2018 is St. Louis’ annual conference for women, minorities, immigrants and anyone interested in starting or growing a business in science, IT, or manufacturing.
This year’s event is particularly special as Dr. Cheryl Watkins-Moore, Director of BioSTL’s Inclusion Initiative will host a Keynote Conversation with Arlan Hamilton, founder of Backstage Capital.
National attention around Arlan Hamilton’s work is at its apex right now. She was recently featured in Fast Company and Forbes, as well as Fortune’s 40 Under 40.
"My name is Arlan. I'm a 37-year old Black woman from Texas, based in LA. Four years ago, I was on food stamps. Today, I have built a venture capital fund from the ground up, and have invested in 100 startup companies led by women, people of color, and LGBTQ founders."✍?

Hamilton built a venture capital fund from the ground up to minimize funding disparities in tech by investing in high-potential founders who are of color, women, and/or LGBT. Since 2015, Backstage has invested $5 million into more than 80 startup companies led by underestimated founders.
If you follow her on Twitter, you’ll notice some delightfully down-to-earth tweets as you follow her recent ascent into the public eye.
Is this real life? I’m the October COVER of @FastCompany! Also the first Black woman who isn’t an entertainer/athlete (@Oprah, @serenawilliams, @Beyonce, @LenaWaithe — my favs!) to be on the cover. I never could have imagined this 3 yrs ago? SO grateful. https://t.co/KInpR6TRxr pic.twitter.com/2YlpsILfsI

POST UPDATE: Event Recap
We love how bullish, pragmatic and straightforward, Arlan is about pursuing a VC firm to become wealthy – it’s not about “helping people” – her investment thesis represents an actual strategic advantage she perceives. @ArlanWasHere @Backstage_Cap #VISION2018 @Visionstlouis pic.twitter.com/lnkBBDne8h

Before all this, Arlan was working in her dream job in music industry. Her interest in startups peaked from seeing celebrities like @aplusk invest in startups. @ArlanWasHere @brownschool #vision2018

At first Arlan was thinking about just setting up a startup – while researching raising capital she “realized, I’m not going to get that meeting” (statistically unlikely for a black gay woman) “the issue was bigger than me” @ArlanWasHere @Backstage_Cap #VISION2018 @Visionstlouis

“One thing I don’t really love about accelerators is that founders are expected to uproot to a new city – when really they should be spending their capital on growth.” So, Arlan expects to launch in more home cities in 2020 @ArlanWasHere @Backstage_Cap #VISION2018 @Visionstlouis
