The Bourbon Friday Show

The Bourbon Friday Show with Dawn Manske from Made for Freedom

January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month

On this episode of the Bourbon Friday Show we had the opportunity to talk with Dawn Manske, Co-Founder and CEO of Made for Freedom, about her mission and how Made for Freedom fights human trafficking with style.

A Calling to Help

In honor of January being National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, the Bourbon Friday Show team wanted to showcase an entrepreneur with a mission to help end human trafficking and provide dignified employment to survivors.

After spending nearly a decade living in China and witnessing the depravity of human trafficking, Manske felt a calling to help despite not exactly knowing how to start when she returned to the US. Once back, with the help of a couple of friends and and a few serendipitous events, Manske began Made for Freedom in 2011.

The mission: Increasing the quality of life for marginalized women and sex trafficking survivors while raising awareness through globally inspired apparel.

To do this, Made for Freedom partners with centers around the world to empower women rescued from sex trafficking in marginalized situations by offering dignified employment. In these centers, women are employed to create a variety of ethically-sourced, artisan products such as jewelry, clothing, and fashion accessories.

Better yet, 20% of proceeds from all sales go to job training and job skills programs for these women.

As always, the Bourbon Friday team does their best to choose a fitting drink for the occasion.

The bourbon for this week is Old Forester 1870, which is a product of a larger namesake, the Brown-Forman Corporation. Along with producing many bourbons that people around the world enjoy, such as Jack Daniel’s, Old Forester, and Woodford Reserve, they are also involved in the fight against human trafficking.

In 2017, Old Forester teamed up with the Anchal Project, an initiative to provide dignified employment for women sex workers in India. In a series of five nation-wide events, the tips that bartenders made during the shifts of those special events were matched by Old Forester and then donated to further the efforts of the Anchal Project. In 2017, Old Forester was able to raise $5,000 for this cause.
