What to Expect at the Event
Startup Connection gives St. Louis’ top startups the chance to present their companies to a packed house of entrepreneurs, investors, and other members of the innovation community. In addition to the Startup Showcase, the event also serves as a resource fair for entrepreneurs to connect with startup support organizations.
“Startup Connection is the Who’s Who of new St. Louis startups,” said Phyllis Ellison, managing director of Startup Connection ’17. “Plus, you’ll see more well-established businesses taking advantage of all of this talent and technology in one room by not only sponsoring the event, but by awarding prizes and services to their favorite new companies.”
Awards include cash prizes and thousands of dollars in accounting services, legal services, and memberships from some top St. Louis businesses.
Here is the list of STL startup companies competing in this year’s Venture Showcase if you need a reminder of how great our Startup scene really is.
Check Out the New Venue
The Globe Building is a historically important venue that sits in the heart of the Downtown Innovation Community. Once the former space of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat it was also where the work of the modern National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) first took place.
The choice of a new venue for this year’s Startup Connection is especially appropriate as the NGA are planning a billion dollar move to St. Louis, essentially returning to their roots.
During World War II, several floors of the Globe Building were taken over by the War Department to establish the Army Air Corps map unit, which was renamed the Aeronautical Chart Plant (ACP) and operated as the U.S. Air Force Aeronautical Chart and Information Center (ACIC). The organization later became the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) which is now known as the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA).
You can learn more about the history of the building in this short documentary.
Today the site’s facilities have been revitalized and re-imagined for modern times, such that entering the lobby feels like you’re stepping onto the set of a science fiction movie.
What’s more, for budding startup founders, I can hardly contain my excitement when I say that The Globe Building is now home to what can only be described as, “CRAZY FAST INTERNET.”
And by crazy fast, I mean the building offers a 900 meg internet connection… and that’s just the upload speed!
