GlobalHack Hosting Second $50,000 Hackathon at Cortex in St. Louis

$50,000 GlobalHack II will take place Aug. 22 - 24, 2014 at the Cortex Innovation District.

It’s back. GlobalHack, the local coding hackathon that hands out $50,000 to the team that best solves a specific technology-related problem for a sponsoring company, has just announced GlobalHack II, to take place August 22-44, 2014, at the Cortex Innovation District.

The non-profit organization holds coding competitions to cultivate talent and innovation. This iteration of the competition is sponsored by OGSystems, a technology and software development company that focuses on developing disruptive solutions for the Department of Defense, Intelligence Community, and commercial businesses.

Just as with the original GlobalHack, all teams will receive the details of the project one hour before the start of the event. They then will have 48 hours to work on the solution.

Qualifications for participating include a baseline understanding of natural language processing, machine learning, formal ontologies and taxonomies, JavaScript, MongoDB, and REST web services. OGSystems will present a $50,000 cash prize to the winning team for the prototype that they develop during the weekend-long event.

β€œWe are thrilled to be part of the energy of GlobalHack II participants as they work to solve big data challenges,” said Mark Tappan, VIPER Labs Chief Engineer at OGSystems. β€œWe know this event will be a fantastic way to expand our research and development presence in the thriving St. Louis hi-tech market.”

Other sponsors of the event include TopOPPS (the title sponsor from GlobalHack I), McGladrey, Cultivation Capital, St. Louis Regional Chamber, Thompson Colburn and Vertical Realty Advisors.

GlobalHack I, held last February, drew 200 developers, designers, and business professionals to St. Louis from California, New York, and across the country. TopOPPS awarded $60,000 in cash prizes and hired 10 participants as full-time employees, including its Head of Engineering who has since relocated from California to St. Louis.
